![]() And, again, this massively harms replayability, which is the defining characteristic of the genre. Despite the wide weapon pool, “builds” in Dead Cells essentially boil down to whether you’re short- or long-ranged, what element you incorporate, if any, and whether you have a shield. Sure, Dead Cells has mutations, but pretty much all of them are minor complements to gameplay that I practically never noticed. This is compounded by the fact that, unlike Dead Cells, each run in WoL sees you amass passive abilities and effects that drastically change the way you approach combat. While by no means perfect, weapon (or spell) variety in WoL is easily the game’s standout feature, both because almost every spell is visually marvellous, and because pretty much everything can be a great choice depending on your build, play-style, and situation. I’m aware custom mode exists, but you cannot progress through the game there so I don’t consider it to be the intended experience (Edit: This is demonstrably untrue, I must’ve misread some text somewhere, sorry!)Ī much better example of how this can be done is, in my opinion, found in Wizard of Legend (terrible name, really solid game). It’s not “the good ones” and “the great ones”, it’s “the viable” and “the worthless”. If I pick this up at the start of the run, I am breezing through most other weapons don’t come close. This is a weapon I unlocked very early in my time with the game, you can spam attacks with it multiple times a second, it has good range, it stuns and electrifies enemies, it bounces between enemies, allowing you to score kills even if they’re two rooms away, it lets you float in mid-air as you spam it, and it automatically targets enemies above and below you so long as you’re facing in their vague direction. Let’s take the electric whip, for example. Obviously some weapons will always be better than others, but my runs consistently live and die depending on what primary weapon I pick up, rather than how well I play. In a game where weapon drops are random, the pool of potential drops is quickly saturated with worthless crap that I will never use. When I commit to unlocking any new weapon, my main thought isn’t “I can’t wait for try this out”, it’s “God I hope this one isn’t shit”. Weapon balance is, to put it bluntly, piss poor. It’s confusing, and it feels like you’re stagnating. Plus, there are plenty of times where you’ll have fully explored a map and be faced with a choice between the door to Area A and Area B, pick Area B, then discover that the door at the end of that section just leads to Area A again. I think this partly comes down to some areas being way too big the Toxic Sewers and Clocktower immediately spring to mind, both because they’re long and sprawling, and because they’re repetitive as hell. To commit that amount of time and come away having gained, for example, most of a new outfit felt like an unrewarding waste. I’d say my average run lasted, included time where the in-game clock was paused, 30-50 minutes. With each run you’ll unlock helpful new items and weapons and skills and runes and, in doing so, gain access to new areas, bosses, etc., etc., etc., but I think Dead Cells drops the ball here for two reasons.Īfter you’ve sunk in a fair few hours, progress becomes extremely slow, and runs become increasingly drawn-out. Not to suggest that Dead Cells doesn’t attempt to compensate in other areas. I think it’s this enjoyable core that the devs hoped would alleviate the grind of multiple playthroughs - repetition is the heart of roguelikes, after all - but, in the case of Dead Cells, this just wasn’t enough for me. Movement is fast, controls are tight, hits feel cathartic, and plenty of the weapons and abilities look fantastic. The moment-to-moment gameplay of Dead Cells has been pretty universally praised, and, even if visual clutter and occasionally irritating enemies definitely hamper the combat experience, I don’t disagree.
